Broward County JROTC History

The Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (JROTC) was created by the National Defence Act of 1916. Few realize that the original program was mandatory for high schools across the nation but voluntary at the college level. The JROTC program was established in Broward County at Fort Lauderdale High School in 1973. The program expanded to four high schools in the early 1980's and in 1993, amidst increased interest, grew to 14 schools. In the past 15 years, Broward's JROTC membership has grown to its current 29 programs with an annual enrollment of over 7,000 student cadets and stating in the 2012-2013 school year the first ROTC program at Hollywood Hills. All four branches, Army, Marine Corps, Navy and Air Force, of the U.S. Military are represented. Broward County has now earned the designation as the largest JROTC program in the State of Florida and and the nation.
